About Diabetes

Diabetes is one of the most pressing health challenges facing the African continent today. Alongside Hypertension, it has quietly become one of the greatest threats to the health, productivity, and prosperity of African families — cutting short destinies, robbing communities of their breadwinners, and burying dreams before they have the chance to unfold.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic condition that occurs when the body is unable to properly regulate blood sugar (glucose) levels — either because it doesn’t produce enough insulin, doesn’t use insulin effectively, or both. Left unmanaged, high blood sugar can damage the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys, and nerves over time.

Why It Matters in Africa

Diabetes affects communities across both rural and urban Africa, often going undiagnosed until serious complications arise. Limited access to screening, treatment, and reliable health information means many people are living with the disease without knowing it — while others struggle to manage it once diagnosed. ADHA believes this does not have to be Africa’s story. With the right knowledge and support, individuals and families can take control of their health and live full, productive lives.

Understanding the Different Types

Diabetes is not a single disease — it takes several forms, each with its own causes, risk factors, and management approach:

  • Type 1 Diabetes — An autoimmune condition, often diagnosed in childhood or young adulthood, where the body produces little to no insulin.
  • Type 2 Diabetes — The most common form, closely linked to lifestyle and metabolic factors, where the body becomes resistant to insulin over time.
  • Gestational Diabetes — A temporary form that develops during pregnancy, requiring careful monitoring for the health of both mother and baby.
  • Kids & Teen Diabetes — Diabetes has unique implications for young people, from diagnosis through daily management at school and at home.
  • Prediabetes — An early warning stage where blood sugar is higher than normal, offering a critical window for prevention.
